Here follows a list of emergency and other useful phone numbers anyone can call from a mobile or landline phone. However, please remember that not every Italian emergency operator is fluent in English. Therefore, for those who do not speak Italian we suggest asking your neighbours or those around you to make the call, if possible. It is very important to provide the operator with precise information on your kind of emergency and exact location.

Carabinieri 112
State Police (Polizia di Stato) 113
Fire department (Vigili del Fuoco) 115
Financial Guard (Guardia di Finanza) 117
Emergency room – ambulance (Pronto soccorso – ambulanza) 118

112 is also the European emergency number which people in distress can call 24/7 throughout the European Union (similarly to 911 in the USA). However, in Italy this number is not yet active all over the country as a consolidated emergency number. In the future dialing 112 will allow you to reach an operator who will redirect your call to the emergency service required (police, ambulance, fire department, etc.). In the meantime, if you call 112 in a region where it is not active, you will reach the Carabinieri who will help you out.

There is also a free App (for Android, Apple, and Windows) called “Where are U” which is the official App for the 112 number. The App provides automatic location and multilanguage services, among others.
